The Paradox of Work: The Secret of Mind Power and Will

The Paradox of Work
The Paradox of Work: the real game is in your mind and your will.

By Masri Sareb Putra

In 2013, I made one of the most important decisions of my life: to take early retirement. It wasn’t an easy call.

I was overwhelmed by worry and stress. The constant “what ifs” followed me everywhere, making every step feel uncertain.

But here’s the surprising part: most of the things we worry about never actually happen.

When I finally stepped away from my career, I didn’t fall into hardship, I found a deep sense of happiness. Freedom from the 9-to-5 grind, from rigid office hours, opened up a whole new space in my life.

Back in 2008, I was serving as Managing Editor at PT Indeks, part of the Kompas-Gramedia publishing group. During that time, I had the opportunity to meet Adam Khoo, a young and widely respected author from Singapore. Representing the publisher, we reached an agreement to translate and acquire the rights to his book Master Your Mind Design Your Destiny.

I was fortunate to meet and negotiate directly with the author of this remarkable book, Adam Khoo, in Jakarta.

I had the privilege of reading and studying the manuscript before anyone else. It left a lasting impression on me, I didn’t just admire it, I tried to internalize and apply its principles in my own life.

 Understanding the Paradox of Work

1. The Power of Positive Thinking

Choosing early retirement forced me to confront my biggest fear, uncertainty about the future. Yet through positive thinking and belief in my own abilities, I discovered a new and unexpected path. A positive mindset generates energy and reveals opportunities that were previously invisible.

2. The Courage to Take Risks

Major life decisions like early retirement demand courage. The risks may seem daunting, but the rewards often outweigh them. Stepping outside your comfort zone can open doors you never imagined existed.

3. Flexibility and Adaptability

Freedom from routine gave me the chance to explore new interests and talents, including writing a biography. The ability to adapt to new circumstances is essential for thriving beyond the conventional world of work.

4. Unlimited Potential

This journey taught me that our potential isn’t confined to a single role or profession. When one door closes, another opens. Discovering and developing new potential is part of a meaningful life.

From Worry to Opportunity

My experience proves a simple truth, what we fear rarely comes to pass.

Before retiring, I imagined countless worst-case scenarios. But reality turned out very differently. Instead of struggle, I found freedom, and with it, meaningful and rewarding opportunities.

Unexpectedly, I was offered a project to write the biography of a public official. The fee I received was substantial, enough to buy a new car, something that once felt far beyond my reach. It was a clear reminder that with the right mindset and determination, what once seemed impossible can become reality.

Lessons and Takeaways

  1. Don’t Be Afraid of Big Decisions
Sometimes the most intimidating choices lead to the most fulfilling outcomes. Risk is part of the path to success.
  2. Believe in Yourself
Confidence and mental strength are essential when facing uncertainty. When you trust your abilities, you find ways to overcome challenges.
  3. Make the Most of Freedom
Freedom from routine is an opportunity, use it to explore, grow, and pursue new paths.
  4. Stay Open to Possibilities
Life is full of unexpected turns. Stay open, and be ready to seize opportunities when they appear.

My story reflects what I call the paradox of work. The very thing we fear leaving behind can sometimes become the gateway to something greater. Worry often exists only in the mind, while reality has a way of offering opportunities far better than we imagine.

So the question becomes, what would you pursue if you gave yourself the freedom to begin again?
