The legend of Bukit Kelam

Long ago, Bujang Beji was consumed by envy over Tumenggung Marubai, who had a knack for reeling in plentiful fish from the Melawi River. Meanwhile, Bujang Beji could only catch a meager supply from the Kapuas River, where it meets Melawi in Sintang. Desperate to change his fate, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

Venturing upstream, he carried back a massive stone, believing it would help divert the Kapuas River’s flow to stop fish from crossing into Melawi. His intention wasn’t to harm Tumenggung Marubai but rather to improve his own fortunes. However, fate had other plans.

As he executed his scheme, he glanced skyward and chuckled, unaware that celestial maidens were watching him from above. In a moment of distraction, he stepped on a thorn, losing his balance and sending the massive stone tumbling before it could reach the confluence of the two rivers.
